Traveling Program

Where Does the Tournament Income Go?

One of the ways we raise money for the program is through fundraising by hosting an annual tournament. The annual traveling tournament typically nets us around $7,000-$8,000 per year. Over the past 5 years we have reinvested over $40,000 back into the program in the way of facility improvements or equipment upgrades. Not only have these improvements benefited basketball, but other youth programs as well. Some examples of community reinvestment as a result of our tournament:

Wilshire Park  Elementary - New backboards and refurbished floor along with new court striping
St. Anthony Community Center - Complete floor refurbishing and divider curtain - additional benefit to daycare and community programs to offer one additional gymansium for events
Elmwood Church - Asbestos abatement, new floor, painting, new backboards, and updated lighting - allows for additional gym space for 3/4 grade players - additional benefit to middle school after school program which did not exist until the basketball program donated 100% of the funds for the new space
St. Anthony High School Upper Gym-  New floor, lighting, scoreboards, and divider curtain - additional benefit to other youth programs as well as Community Center day care services.
St. Anthony High School Lower Gym - Floor striping and finishing
Other - New uniforms for 2011, donation for 2011 Hennepin County Grant proposal -while not a direct benefit to basketball, we still felt it was important to support the community and other youth sports.

In addition to the items above, the BYBA annually donates two basketball registrations valued at $150.00 each to the Wilshire Park Fun Fest as well as the VillageFest Silent Auction. One hundred percent of the proceeds from those those two donations go directly to Wilshire Park and VillageFest.

General Information

General  Information: The Traveling basketball program is more intense and competitive and is designed to give the players in our community an opportunity to compare their basketball skills with other communities’ players in 6 - 13 weekend tournaments (at the coaches discretion) and/or a weekly league schedule. Players are selected through a tryout procedure. Traveling basketball requires additional player, parent and financial commitment. Traveling teams typically practice two nights per week with 3-5 tournament games per tournament eekend. Tournaments are located throughout the metro area and may include an out-of-town tournament. The commissioners and coaches determine dates, times and locations of tournaments. Parents need to be prepared to drive and stay for their players’ games. Practices begin in October and continue through early March. The Scheduling Coordinator assigns practice times in October in cooperation with coaching staffs.

Eligibility: The area of service of the SASB/BYBA will be the same as the residents or enrolled students in the geographic boundaries of the St. Anthony/New Brighton Independent School District 282, grades 4-8. Players not residing in or enrolled in schools within the district boundaries may participate in the SASB/BYBA Traveling program only to complete a team roster. No exceptions!

Registration and Fees: On-Line Registration Deadline is the time and date for your FIRST tryout session.

The registration fee for the Traveling Program is $150.00 for the 2011-2012 season ($300.00 maximum per family). No refunds for players that do not make a Traveling team and still play in the In-House league (except the difference in registration fees)

All players will also need to provide a $100.00 refundable uniform deposit/volunteer fee that will be returned at the end of the season when the uniform is returned in proper condition, and the required volunteer hours have been worked.

Reminder: Pre-registration & Payment on-line is required for Traveling tryouts

In addition to the program registration fee, parents should expect to pay an additional $125-$225 per player for yearly tournament fees. Families of players should also be prepared to incur other miscellaneous expenses at tournaments (admission fees, concessions, etc.) Teams may also attend an out of town tournament, which involves transportation, food and lodging expenses.

Tryouts: Players interested in trying out for the Traveling program will do so at their own grade level. Players may not tryout above or below their grade level. Players should plan to attend both tryout sessions for their level. Attendance at one session is mandatory unless prior arrangements have been made with the basketball commissioners. Evaluators may request a third try-out session for a grade level to better evaluate a group.

Gym shoes must be worn at tryouts. Only Board members, the evaluators, and the players will be allowed in the gymnasium during the tryout sessions. Two to three evaluators will be present at each session. Evaluators rate players on basic skills, form, court presence, teamwork and attitude. Scores from the evaluators are averaged and players are ranked by scores. If the evaluators determine that there are enough players that demonstrate quality skills, a second Traveling team may be formed. The decisions of the evaluators are final. Players who are not selected for the Traveling teams will be selected to play on In-House teams. Please be dressed and ready for tryouts 15 minutes prior to your scheduled try out session

Coaches: The Traveling program is dependent on volunteer coaches. A coaches’ meeting is scheduled for October. All required coaching forms for 2011-2012 can be found below.  A criminal backgrount check and coaching certification are required. Team rosters and coaching information are handed out at this meeting.

5th Annual Huskie Boy’s and Girl’s Traveling Tournament: The Boosters Basketball Program will be sponsoring its 5th Annual Boys and Girls Traveling Basketball Tournament. This year’s dates are tentatively set for February 18-19, 2012 for both boys and girls. All traveling team parents are expected to assist at the tournament for set-up, clock, scoring, admissions, concessions, and clean-up. Proceeds from the tournament will be used to help defray our equipment, uniform and program expenses in the future.

2011-2012 Required Coaching Forms

Both forms must be completed

Criminal Background Checks

In addition to the two forms above, each coach must submit a criminal background check annually (coaching in other sports that also perform background checks does not exempt a coach from a background check from the BYBA propgram). A link to the secure on-line vendor that the BYBA utilizes will be sent to each selected Head Coach and Assistant(s) Coach(es).

Mandatory Concussion Training Effective September 1, 2011

In the 2010 legislative session a bill was passed and signed into law regarding concussions and youth athletes.  Minnesota has joined a growing number of states that have passed laws on providing concussion information, training and procedures to be followed for youth athletes to return to play.  The law is effective as of September 1st, 2011.

The Minnesota legislation requires any municipality, business, school district or nonprofit organization that organizes a youth athletic activity and charges a fee to follow the statute’s requirements.

The BYBA would like to point out several things:

  • The statute applies to all practices and games.
  • Even though the statute does not officially take effect until September 1, the online training is available now.  The BYBA requires that coaches take the online video training session and test developed by the Centers for Disease Control and the National Federation of State High Schools at www.nfhslearn.com. The course requires registration, but registeration is free. You must print out the course completion certificate as proof of completion of the training.
  • This statute applies to all youth programs and clubs in Minnesota.  As noted in the policy, each program will have to adopt its own policy.
  • Any Extraterritorial coach or player who plays in any game or tournament in Minnesota is also affected.  Coaches will have to take the training and both coaches and players have to follow the removal/return to play requirements anytime they are in Minnesota.
  • This affects all sports, not just basketball.

BYBA Coach Selection Policy

Procedure/Policy Change for 2011-2012 Basketball Season:

Effective January 2011, coaches from the previous winter basketball season will remain the named head coach of the team for the ensuing season(s), unless informed otherwise. All prospective coaches are encouraged to apply for the position they are intrested in. In the event that a candidate or candidates apply for a coaching position that is currently filled, both the applicant(s) and incumbent coach will be asked to participate in a interview process, after which the most qualified individual will be  selected. Please review the attached coach selection process document carefully.

Coaches of record must still submit to a criminal background check, re-new the concussion training every three years, and sign the coaches conduct pledge but are no longer required to submit a coaching application annually.
